European Digital Identity: A key element of the digital single market - DDSP

"How to structure a European digital identity that works in the cryptoactive market, especially in its more decentralized solutions?"

Yesterday we held a session in the working group DDSP extension de Fide Foundation on «European Digital Identity». I firmly believe that it is a core element of opportunities to achieve the Digital Single Market. The European Commission proposed the creation of a "European Digital Identity Wallet" in June and at the same time the negotiation of the new eIDAS Regulation is being finalized. With the moderation of Montse Guardia Guell, we hear the progress of the National Currency and Stamp Factory through Jose Manuel Panizo Plaza, we debate with Nacho Alamillo Sunday on the scope and status of the eIDAS Regulation and the standardization work since Alastria Blockchain Ecosystem and its authentication protocol and we have the views of the Bank of Spain with Carlos Piqueras. European digital identity is a central theme of future success digital euro, not only for a possible control of emission limits, but because the "onboarding" under the principles of the eIDAS regulation must be not only robust but done in a convenient way for users.

  • Today the ecosystem of solution providers around the future European digital identity is unclear. While countries like Italy have created a competitive framework for authenticated identity service providers under the mandate of public authorities, other European countries have not yet established a clear framework.
  • If data is owned by citizens and cannot be monetized, what are the incentives for identity solution providers? Should they charge customers?
  • European solutions should be interoperable. The large technology platforms have made “easy onboarding” a claim to attract online traffic, and new digital identity solutions should compete for users with already established solutions.
  • How to structure a European digital identity that works in the critical asset market, especially in its more decentralized solutions?
  • How to make the provision of identities by public authorities and by private companies compatible when we need different identities in different contexts, so that the citizen is the owner of his own identity? The issue is so key for Europe that it must find a solution: "either we do it or they do it to us" (in a certain sense we have a similar challenge with the European Payment Initiative (#EAR)
  • Is there an industry that could be the “adoption engine” of digital identity, such as payment platforms?

These are just some of the issues that were raised at the meeting.
