Further to the COVID Crisis, it is now generally admitted that our Planet will experience a complex period of economic recovery. Some of the business sectors using Geographical Indications are among those suffering deeply under the COVID crisis. Which role can be played by Geographical Indications in supporting economic recovery, and in promoting post-covid sustainable development? Should the role of Geographical Indications expand to new categories of goods and how can this be achieved, including in EU-promoted Free Trade Agreements? Referring to the criticism of the US and several other wealthy or developing countries against Geographical Indications, is the current system fair and promising for all? Will the US and EU approach converge or further diverge, and would there be space for diverse international harmonization scenarios? Speakers from Europe, India, North and South America with a variety of opinions will provide a worldwide picture of the future of Geographical Indications and Traceability in a deeply Covid transformed world.

Prof. Patricia COVARRUBIA (CV)
Dr Covarrubia is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Buckingham and an IP consultant at the Latin America IPR SME Helpdesk, co-funded by the EU Commission. She holds an LLM in European Law and PhD in Intellectual Property. Previously, she worked at the University of Brunel teaching IP Law and European Law. She has worked at BPP, School of Law, London where she was EU leader tutor for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). She taught in Bucks New University and in Holborn College, North Greenwich where she ran Liverpool John Moores, Wales University and London University programmes. Dr Covarrubia is manager/blogger in IPTango (Intellectual Property weblog – Latin America) listed as one of the “World’s Best IP Blogs” [BananaIP.com]. and one of the “Top 15 Blogs for an Intellectual Property (IP) Enthusiasts” [Buzzfeed]. Her research interests include geographical indications and indications of origin, compulsory licences in the pharmaceutical industry, and the protection of traditional knowledge. She is the author of Chemical Sense Marks: Frequent concerns when applying for trademark registration at the OHIM (Saarbrücken: VDM Publishing, 2011).
Prof. Justin HUGHES (CV)
Hon. William Matthew Byrne Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola Marymount University, where he teaches international trade and intellectual property courses. He previously taught at Cardozo Law School in New York. From 2009 until 2013, Professor Hughes also served as Senior Advisor to the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property. In that capacity, he was the US chief negotiator for two multilateral treaties, the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances (2012) and the Marrakesh Treaty for the Blind (2013). Educated at Oberlin and Harvard, Professor Hughes practiced international arbitration in Paris and, as a Henry Luce Scholar, clerked for the Lord President of the Supreme Court of Malaysia. From 2006-2009, he was Chairman of the Technicolor/Thomson Foundation for Film and Television Heritage. Professor Hughes has also done volunteer democracy development work in Albania, Bosnia, El Salvador, Haiti, and Mali.
Prof. Delphine MARIE-VIVIEN (CV)
She holds a MSc in Chemistry and a PhD in law. After 2 years as patent engineer, she joined CIRAD in 1999, a French public research institute dedicated to agricultural research for developing countries, to work on intellectual property, genetic resources and geographical indications (GIs). Visiting researcher at NLSIU (National Law School of India University), Bangalore, India from 2005-2008, she defended her PhD thesis on «The law of Geographical indications in India compared to French, EU and International laws», Paris University (Ehess), published by Sage. She was from 2012 to 2018 based in Vietnam, working on GIs research and development projects in South-East Asia. She is a consultant for the French development agency (AFD), EUIPO, UNIDO, Swiss IPI for projects on GIs in Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Sri Lanka), South America (Colombia) and West Africa. She has been working on drafting GI laws, GI examination manual for IP offices, GI specifications, GI control & enforcement systems, GI producer’s association building. She participated with Redd to the international training on GIs InterGI since 2007 and developed the training in Asia since 2016. She is teaching IP law and GI law at various Universities and supervises PhD students. From her theoretical and empirical research combined to her consultancy work, she has written extensively on GIs in Asia, in Europe and worldwide, regarding the public/private governance of GIs, the protection of GIs for handicraft goods, GIs and the protection of biodiversity, GIs and development, the control and enforcement of GIs, etc.
Prof. Arul George SCARIA (CV)
Dr Arul George Scaria specialises in intellectual property and competition law. He is an Associate Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Innovation, IP and Competition (CIIPC) at National Law University, Delhi. He is also an affiliate faculty of the CopyrightX program, offered under the auspices of Harvard Law School, HarvardX distance-learning initiative, and Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. He was an IMPRS-CI scholarship holder at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich. He was awarded doctoral degree with Summa cum Laude (the highest distinction) by the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, Munich. His post-doctoral research at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), Belgium, was in the area of open access to large scale research data. His publications include Piracy in the Film Industry: Copyright and Cultural Consonance (Cambridge University Press, 2014) and Ambush Marketing: Game Within a Game (Oxford University Press, 2008). He is currently working on projects in the areas of open science, open innovation, and regulation of digital markets in the context of AI, big data and IoT.
