Shaking the Good Old IP Kit: The Metaverse

Global Digital Encounters 25

Objectives

During, and further to the COVID Crisis, the Metaverse steadily developed, and its role became even more central to the Business World. A Global Digital Encounter was already fully dedicated to “The Metaverse as a Challenge to Classical IP” and got a massive audience and content success. Since there is such a growing interest in the relationship between the Metaverse and IP, and for the first time in the history of the Global Digital Encounters, the GDE Team decided to dedicate a second encounter to this topic. Thus, our 25th Anniversary Encounter will focus on ” Shaking the Good Old IP Kit: The Metaverse” with the presence as well of exceptional Colleagues. The focus will be on the following:

  • Lex mercatoria: Are we going to witness the emergence of lex metaversum akin to medieval lex mercatoria? Will traditional law of the land prevail over conflicting customary norms?
  • Digital ownership: Is it possible to transfer ownership of digital assets in Metaversum? How can copyright and/or civil law doctrine deal with the subject matter?
  • Personal data: Will our privacy rights be honored in the Metaverse world? More specifically, how to implement the right to be forgotten on the blockchain where nothing can be actually erased?

Which meanings for IP might be expected from the metaverse revolution? Speakers from Europe will provide a worldwide picture of the future of “Shaking the Good Old IP Kit: The Metaverse”, including re-imagining IP in this area in favor of both business and consumers/society.
