In a post-crisis environment, re-imagining IP may mean better understanding and further enhancing its role for society in supporting the safeguard, protection, and promotion of intangible cultural heritage. How may both the economic function of IP and its social function support intangible cultural heritage’s preservation and valorization? Will the complex period of economic recovery leave more space to it than in the past? Can multilateral treaties be developed or expanded in this respect? Which relation is to be developed between Intangible Cultural Heritage and IP in a sustainable development and indigenous people-oriented perspective? Speakers from various continents, with a variety of opinions will provide a worldwide picture of the future of Intangible Cultural Heritage and IP in a profoundly transformed world.

Prof. Harriet DEACON
Harriet Deacon is a historian with interests in tangible and intangible heritage management, public policy on heritage, intellectual property law and the intersection between culture and health. She was involved in the preparation and delivery of UNESCO training materials from 2010. She has facilitated workshops in Central Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and in Latin America and the Caribbean. She has a Ph.D. in History and an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property. At present, she is affiliated to the Coventry University Centre for Dance Research and is working on research projects in India and Kyrgyzstan exploring the role of ICH in sustainable development.
Prof. Dr. Tuomas Mattila, LL.M., M.Soc.Sc
Doctoral fellow in the University of Helsinki. He has worked as an IP-lawyer specialized in trademarks and copyright, in private sector and in European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). His doctoral thesis focuses on the concept of authorship in copyright law for the purposes of collective creativity, and particularly in traditional contexts. One of the case-studies in his thesis has been the collective creativity within Sámi people in Finland. Along with his doctoral work he has conducted a study “Needs of the Sámi people for intellectual property protection from the viewpoint of copyright and trademarks” in 2018 assigned by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland. Furthermore, he has written several articles on the topic, published in Nordiskt Immateriellt Rättsskydd (NIR) and Ethnologia Fennica. He is currently participating to the organization of Conference on protection of Nordic Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Intellectual Property, organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland and Sami Parliament of Finland (with others) and which will be held in November 2021.
Alexander PARRA PEÑA
Lawyer. Alexander holds a Master in Intellectual Property from Los Andes University, a specialization in Industrial Property, Copyright and New Technologies of the Externado University of Colombia and studies in International Cooperation and Project Management from the same university. Alexander has participated in the InterGI training course on appellations of origin in Switzerland and to the Mission of Training Public support networks in the Solidarity Sector at the Polytechnical University of Valencia-Spain. On several occasions, Alexander has been invited to national and international events to expose issues of Intellectual Property applied to the Crafts. During his career Alexander has served as a professional of the State law offices and assistant in educational and social projects. Since 2003, Alexander has worked at “Artesanias de Colombia”, an organisation where he currently occupies the position of Project Coordinator in charge of the Implementation of Intellectual Property Rights in handicrafts in Colombia.
