Before, during, and further to the COVID Crisis, Open Science steadily developed, and its role is become even more central for the Research World, for Business World and for Citizens and Society in general. Its development and use are connected to major advancements of creativity in many sectors, and this brings legal consequences, for Classical IP, and offers real challenges in particular to the Patent System and to Copyright and Neighboring Rights Law. New models are being developed and are in urgent need for clarity on the interaction of Open Science with classical IP. Which meanings might be expected from this evolution / revolution? Speakers from Europe and North America will provide a worldwide picture of the future of “Open Science: the dilemma”, including on re-imagining IP in this area in favor of both fair business and consumers/society.

Richard Gold is the James McGill Professor of Intellectual Property and Innovation in the Faculty of Law, and in the Department of Human Genetics and the Biomedical Ethics Unit in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is also a member of the Bieler School of the Environment. His work focuses on innovation and intellectual property law and policy, with a special emphasis on open science.
Roberto Caso, co-director of Trento LawTech Group, is Associate Professor of Comparative Private Law at University of Trento, Faculty of Law, where he teaches Civil Law [Diritto civile], Comparative Intellectual Property Law, Comparative Privacy Law, Copyright law and Art, CopyrightX Trento. He is author and editor of publications in the field of Intellectual Property, Privacy, Contract Law and Tort Law. He is President of the Italian Association for the Promotion of Open Science [Asssociazione Italiana per la promozione della Scienza Aperta [AISA].
Professor of Law at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) where he holds the Chair in Intellectual Creation and Innovation Law and is Director of JurisLab, a research unit of the Center for private law located in the FabLab ULB. He is also Associate Professor at Université de Liège (ULiège), where he teaches in the LL.M. in IP & Competition Law organized by the EU Legal Studies Institute. Next to his main affiliations, he is Invited Professor (Gastdocent) at KULeuven (Master of IP& ICT Law), Invited Professor at Centre d’études internationales de la propriété intellectuelle (CEIPI) of University of Strasbourg (University Diploma in AI & IP), Affiliated Researcher at Digital Law Center (DLC) of University of Geneva and member of the Belgian Council for Intellectual Property. In the past, he has been Research Fellow (2010-2014) and PostDoc Researcher at National Fund for Scientific Research (2016-2020), Visiting Research Fellow at Columbia University in the City of New York (2012-2013) and Global Policy Fellow at Instituto de Tecnologia e Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro (2018). His main fields of expertise are Copyright Law; AI & IP; Fundamental Rights & IP.
Senior Legal and Policy Adviser at Athena Research and Innovation Centre and the Head of Digital Development and Innovation at the Onassis Group. He is currently teaching and researching Legal and Ethical Aspects of Data Science at the Athens University of Economics and Business. Prodromos has worked for the National Hellenic Research Foundation (National Documentation Centre), the European Commission, Oslo University and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He read law and Information Systems in Athens and London and holds a PhD in Law and Information Systems from the LSE. Prodromos has worked as an adviser for the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, the Special Secretary for Digital Convergence, as well as public sector bodies and private companies in the cultural and creative industries. He has served as the Chair of the Administrative Council of the Greek Industrial Property Organisation (OBI). Prodromos has provided legal advice for multiple European e-infrastructures and research infrastructures, including the setting up of the OpenAIRE Legal Entity, CLARIN, META-SHARE, EOSC, DARIAH, HELIX (Greek Digital Infrastructure for Research) etc. He is the director of the Institute of IPR and Innovation at EPLO and the Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Patent Academy (EPA).
