For British, European and Worldwide IP, Brexit means a partial fragmentation of a major IP Regional construction. This is a new phenomenon that is going in the exact opposite direction of the international evolution of IP, marked by 140 years of further regional and global harmonization trends. This fragmentation is taking place in the midst of the Covid crisis. Which meanings might be expected from this change largely unwanted by the IP Family? Will the UK and EU approach on various IPRs rapidly diverge? On which IPRs is this scenario likely and can we say that regional and international IP treaties applicable to both the EU and the UK have rendered this “divorce” less painful than what it could have been? How do all these European matters relate to the rest of the world? Speakers from Europe and North America will provide a worldwide picture of this foreseeable changed environment under a deeply transformed post-crisis world and elaborate on possible future scenarios.

Professor emeritus in law, University of Surrey; Visiting professor, Newcastle Law School; Visiting professor, Queen Mary, University of London; Chairman, British Literary and Artistic Copyright Association; Associate member, Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys; Committee member, European Intellectual Property Teachers’ Network. Alison originally studied physics, but curiosity about patents led her to the law, first into legal practice at the Bar, then into academia. Her research interests cover the laws of intellectual property and their interaction with other areas of law, such as contract and competition law. She has had the privilege of teaching, supervising, examining and writing across the range of IP and of speaking and teaching engagements in a number of common and civil law jurisdictions, as well as for international organisations such as WIPO and the European Patent Office. Her book Trade Marks: Law and Practice has just been published in its fifth edition (LexisNexis, with Peter Cornford and Andrew Griffiths). Alison contributes to Cole and Davis, eds, CIPA Guide to the Patents Act, and von Lewinski, ed, Copyright throughout the World.
Professor Craig NARD (CV)
Galen J. Roush Professor of Law and Director of the Spangenberg Center for Law, Technology & the Arts at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the World Intellectual Property Organization Academy in Torino, Italy and Visiting Professor at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. He is widely published in the area of patent law, with scholarly articles appearing in many of the most prominent law journals, including Georgetown Law Journal, Northwestern Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, Supreme Court Economic Review and the Review of Law and Economics. Professor Nard is also the author of a leading patent law casebook, The Law of Patents (5th ed. Wolters Kluwer). Prior to entering the legal academy, he clerked for the Honorable Giles S. Rich and Helen W. Nies of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. and, before that, was the Julius Silver Fellow in law and technology at Columbia University School of Law. In 2014-15, Professor Nard was voted “Professor of the Year” by the First-Year law school class and, in 2019, received the law school alumni’s “Distinguished Teacher Award.”
Professor Alain STROWEL (CV)
Professor at the University Saint-Louis, Brussels and at the UCLouvain where he teaches courses in intellectual property, IT and media law. He also gives courses in the advanced master in intellectual property and IT law at the Munich IP Law Center. In 2020-2021, he is fellow at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society (Berlin).
Alain is avocat at the Brussels bar since 1988, now with the firm Pierstone, speciallised in digital law. He is an arbiter for the WIPO and “.be” domain names dispute resolution systems.
He has been appointed as a trustee of the European Law Academy (ERA, Trier, 2012-2019) and was elected to the Academia Europaea in 2012. Since 2019, he chairs the Intellectual Property working group of All European Academies (ALLEA) to which he contributed since 2012.
Alain graduated in law, economics and philosophy at the UCLouvain and the University of Amsterdam. He holds a PhD in Law from UCLouvain.
Today his research focuses on data governance, Artificial Intelligence and the regulation of online platforms.
Professor Gabriele GAGLIANI (CV)
Lecturer in Law & Faculty Member at Bocconi University (Milan, Italy) and Adjunct Professor at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH, U.S.A.). He has taught and researched in universities and institutions around the world, including the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL, London, U.K.), the University of Poitiers (France), and the Master in International Studies organized by the University of Francophonie and the University of Szeged (Hungary). The results of his research have been published in several international academic journals and presented at universities around the world, including King’s College London (U.K.), Georgetown University (U.S.A.), McGill University (Canada), and the University of Geneva (Switzerland), among others. Concurrently, he has worked as a consultant for governments, international organizations, enterprises, and individuals. He holds an LL.B and a Master of Laws from the University of Milan (Italy) (Cum laude), an LL.M. in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO LL.M., University of Barcelona, Spain) (With distinction), a Diploma from the Helsinki University Summer Seminar on International Law (Finland) (With Distinction), and a double Ph.D. from the École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay (France), and the University of Palermo (Italy). He speaks several languages and works in English, French, Italian, and Spanish.
