Fide presents – Oxford Record: Nationalism, populism, and identities: contemporary challenges

"This relevant and essential document is published as a result of the dedication and hard work of all congress participants, leaders and working group participants, congress directors, and the strategic advice of Fide's International Academic Council."

We are pleased to present the final Oxford Record: Nationalism, populism, and identities: contemporary challenges, published by Fide. This document is a compilation of all the individual papers prepared by the different Working Groups and professionals, analyzed and discussed in depth in preparatory sessions and at Fide’s II Oxford Congress in 2022 at Jesus College (Oxford), and finalized for their publication. In line with the congress’s objectives, this document articulates a set of conclusions and recommendations to be disseminated among decision-makers, organizations, industry leaders, and experts with a view to their consideration by the competent authorities.

Fide’s Oxford Record is presented as a complete document with a presentation from Fide’s president, Cristina Jimenez, an overview of the Working groups, and a Call for EU action covering the themes and recommendations of Fide’s Oxford Congress. The papers that follow cover topics of the economy, inequality, the future of the EU project, the COVID-19 pandemic, and constitutional, legal, and governance questions, in the context of nationalism. It also covers aspects of the impact of nationalist/populist policies on the funding of South American pension schemes where there have been unexpected calls on funds to deal with the effects of COVID-19, as well as other cross-cutting issues, using free-standing panels on EU refugee externalisation policies, climate change issues (with specific reference to the outcome of the Conference of the Parties (COP) 26 in November 2021 in Glasgow), and misinformation and free speech in modern democratic societies.

This relevant and essential document is published as a result of the dedication and hard work of all congress participants, leaders and working group participants, congress directors, and the strategic advice of Fide’s International Academic Council. We would like to thank all the participants for their dedication to the Working Groups, the congress, and Fide and for bringing this document to publication. Fide would like to express our special gratitude to the Congress Directors Christopher Muttukumaru and Cristina Jiménez for the hard work carried out during all these months.
